Dear conference delegates,
Regretfully the ASOHNS executive and Annual Scientific Meeting conveners have decided to cancel the meeting in Sydney following lengthy discussions and meetings with health department officials yesterday. I was not involved in the meetings nor the decision, however I did have the opportunity to convey my thoughts to Dr Richard Harvey, the surgical convener early yesterday morning.
They see no opportunity to post pone or reschedule.
Although we convene our own meeting and pay our own way – we rely heavily on our partnership with ASOHNS to hold our annual conference. They have suggested we do not meet (all catering and social events have been cancelled)and given the current circumstances – some hospitals and health services requesting staff do not attend conferences nor travel interstate, I am left with no choice but to cancel our conference.
I understand there will be much individual financial loss due to unrefundable flights and accommodation bookings, as I myself will experience. Sadly, I cannot offer compensation for that.
Conference registrations will be refunded over the coming days.
It is impossible for me to convey how disheartened I am by this decision but given the current epidemiological environment and the prospect of the upcoming winter ‘flu’ season I understand the motivation for the decision. The fact that we are front line health care workers cannot be overlooked. The possibility of a large number of health care workers requiring isolation at the same time was a large factor in the decision.
I am happy to field questions or take your thoughts on board.
Myself and the majority of the OHNNG coordinators still plan on going to Sydney. If anybody wished to come together as a group, I would be happy to look for an appropriate venue (it would not be the convention centre). This would be a social event, most likely on Friday afternoon.
Kind regards and best wishes,
Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Nurses Group
I invite you to attend the 24th OHNNG annual conference which will be held at the Sydney International Convention Centre from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th March.
The recently revamped centre is spectacularly spacious and is surrounded by the colourful, eclectic, and buzzing Darling Harbour.
The OHNNG annual conference is renowned for the quality and variety
of its program, access to international ORL speakers and the opportunity
to meet, network and enjoy the company of likeminded ORL, H&N nurses.
For the 2020 conference I have scheduled a few novel sessions and trust they will enhance the value of your professional and personal participation.
Perpetually, our aim for the annual conference is to bring ORL nurses together, to offer a program that educates, stimulates and motivates. The engaging list of international, national and nursing speakers will go along way to achieving our goal. The relaxed & welcoming nature of the OHNNG team will do the rest.
On behalf of the OHNNG executive and committee, we look forward to seeing you in Sydney for what will be another professionally gratifying event.
